Dr. Frank says,
"“Leadership Bias”

"The famous moral and social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt, bemoans the current academic state of his own academic specialty, saying that over 95% of the researchers in his area lean (and vote) to the Left. This results in an academic echo chamber rather than a community where scientific progress is likely.

His field is not the only one like this, and it makes sense. People passionate about justice, public health, and the environment (for instance) tend to lean left, and tend to be drawn to careers in government where they can exert what they see as a positive influence. As described by Haidt, the “caring” moral pillar tends to be the strongest in people who lean to the left.

But there is a big problem with this. Because of the academic situation, an unbalanced proportion of our government officials end up being left of center vs their constituents. So as our leaders implement public policy decisions they end up consulting with mostly left-leaning epidemiologists, left-leaning sociologists, and left-leaning public policy experts.

Our government bureaucracies end up being an extension of the academic echo chamber.

So naturally, the right-leaning constituency ends up rebelling against what they perceive as left-leaning policy. It’s why phrases like “Drain the Swamp” resonate so much with conservatives.

So when something like Covid comes along, aggressive emergency policies, temporarily exempted from moderating legislative bodies, naturally tend to lean to the political left.

I’ve been reading the comments on this page for months. It is clear that conservatives were willing to tolerate this for a time, acknowledging that the situation was dire.

But now, conservatives correctly sense that the situation is no longer so dire, and it is time to return to constitutional moderation. They resent what they perceive to be false hype about their epidemics in an attempt to retain executive emergency powers.

Now, it seems to me that our government leaders need to return power to the people. Otherwise they will lose the cooperation of half of their constituents, and we need cooperation in order to continue to address the real issues at this phase of the epidemic."
