President Trump Warns Nigerian Government

President Donald Trump is being called by world leaders, "The Peacemaker," and some have suggested he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his assistance in helping to end wars all around the world.  Now he calls for the peace within a country that seems to not have control over terrorists.

The GDP Nigeria 188 billion. We have sent aid to them that represents 4% of their budget most recent budget.  It is country  with 47% of the population identify as Christians.

Nigeria is a religiously mixed country: large Christian population in the south and middle belt, large Muslim population in the north, plus traditional belief systems. Since about the late 1990s and early 2000s, twelve Muslim-majority northern states adopted or sought to adopt Sharia law, which has been a flashpoint in Christian/Muslim relations.

The 2000 Kaduna riots (February–May 2000) erupted over the introduction of Sharia in Kaduna State; many Christians protested and clashes followed with large casualties. Estimates vary between 1,000 and 5,000 dead.

The 2001 Jos riots in Jos (Plateau State) between Christian and Muslim communities killed about 1,000 people; though not exclusively Christian victimhood, Christian communities were strongly affected.

The Yelwa massacre (2004) is often cited: armed Muslims attacked Christians in Yelwa (Plateau State) killing over 700 (with a Christian community specifically targeted) and later retaliatory attacks killed many more.

The emergence of Boko Haram around 2009, and later its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), introduced large-scale attacks that often targeted Christian towns, churches, and individuals.

At the same time, in Nigeria’s “middle belt” (central states like Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, etc.) the rise of herder-farmer conflict (especially involving the Fulani herdsmen) has disproportionately impacted Christian-majority farming communities. Many of these attacks are framed as resource/land conflict, but people from Christian communities argue religion is a marked factor.

Recent reports state that thousands of Christians have been killed in Nigeria in the last decade. For example: “at least 52,250 Christians” killed between 2009 and 2023 per one NGO report.

Alongside killings and church destruction, there is massive internal displacement of Christian populations. One source claims at least 15 million people displaced “forced to abandon their villages, ancestral homes, and churches.”

A sense of vulnerability and unequal protection: many Christian leaders argue that Nigerian security forces either respond too late or fail to protect Christian communities as effectively as others

The destruction of churches and Christian infrastructure is also highlighted: one report says ~19,100 Christian churches destroyed or looted since the Boko Haram uprising to 2025 (average ~1,200 per year). Targeted kidnappings of Christian clergy, church members, and Christian villages are increasingly documented. For instance, a report noted that in 2021 around 3,800 Christians were abducted in Nigeria.

Some of the violence comes from extremist Islamist groups that explicitly target Christian individuals and institutions (churches, Christian schools) as part of a broader aim to impose a strict Islamic order. Northern Nigerian states that have adopted or sought Sharia law, Christians deal with systemic discrimination (denied land to build churches, restricted curricula.

The Christians are the weak governance, poor policing, corruption, and impunity contribute. Many attacks go un-investigated.

Loss of life and property: many Christian communities suffer massacres, burnings of homes and churches, and farmland destruction. There are displacement and refugee-like conditions: uprooted communities forced to flee their ancestral lands; loss of livelihoods.

Christian leaders are kidnapped, congregations disrupted, the fear of further attacks affects the viability of some Christian communities. Churches are being destroyed, Christian schools attacked or closed, Christian land is denied for building churches.

The situation raises questions about Nigeria protects religious minorities in multi-faith societies, equality by the law, and whether religious identity exacerbates existing ethnic/resource conflicts or is a central cause.

International awareness is critical and President Trump's response will hopefully put an end to this madness.
